A shackle is a U-shaped piece of metal secured with a clevis pin or bolt across the opening. Woodruff keys are shaped like a half circle and used to lock gears and pulleys to the drive shafts of machine tools and engines. The round edge of the key is designed to fit into the keyseat, which is a curved pocket on the shaft. The flat edge of the key remains exposed and fits into the keyway, which is a rectangular groove in the gear or pulley.
