An indexable grinding wheel is a cutting tool used in the manufacturing industry, most often for milling operations on a CNC machine. It consists of a durable steel or carbide tool body with several pockets into which small, replaceable cutting tips, called inserts, are clamped. The main advantage is that you only replace the small inserts, which are less expensive than a full-size solid end mill. The tool body can be reused for years. This is especially true for larger diameter cutters where the cost of a solid tool would be very high. These are known for their ability to remove a large volume of material quickly, making them ideal for roughing operations. The steel tool body is also less brittle than a solid carbide tool, which makes it more resistant to vibration and breakage during heavy cuts.
